The winning entry to the flash fiction contest, Carnations and Ashes. Congratulations to the author, Maddy K.!    Carnations and Ashes By Maddy K It was ironic - to say the least - that even after all these years, she still had the two things that meant nothing to her. And yet, they meant everything to her. In past years, where he had shown her what was in the world. That there was more to life than the horrors publicized on the news.  There was beauty and wonder. Joy and hope. But it had all ended on that horrible night when he was in the news as one of those lost. Ashes rained from the sky. Flames devoured his building. The destruction that he had tried to keep her away from had ended up consuming him.  Now here she was, decades later, still trying to forget him and the gaping hole he had left in her heart. She hadn’t tried to fill it. Just forget. Nothing was working so far. ...

     It's the moment that you've all been waiting for! It's finally time to announce the winner of the flash fiction contest ...      But before that, a few words. Wait just a minute! Don't you go and skip to the announcement! I have a few things to say first, and we must build up the proper suspense.     I really, honestly enjoyed hosting this contest. I appreciated every entry that I received, and I definitely saw talent in all of them. Each one held such a unique style and approach to the picture prompt. Thank you to everyone who entered!
